NEWS FROM THE ART WORLD

In her article about the Cezanne in Provence show, currently at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. in the January 27 issue of the New York Times, Roberta Smith looks at how the artist makes art out of the landscape surrounding him. She speaks of his vision and the symbiosis of this vision and the landscape itself; of the enormous import of the natural world and also of the uniqueness of each artist’s vision of this world. She says”It was the landscape of Provence more than anything else , that pushed Cezanne to make his particular changes. It prodded him to unhinge painting from conventional representation, to create breathing space between his brushstrokes and what they described.”
This is a beautiful evocation of the relationship between artist and subject and holds true for portraiture as well as landscape; this “ breathing space “ can be thought of as where the soul of the subject and that of the artist intersect to create art, something larger than either.

NEWS FROM THE STUDIO

The first Women’s watercolor retreat was held at the Studio in the middle of January. Six women, most of whom had never painted before ,spent two full days experiencing
the natural beauty and comfort of the Studio, while learning the fundamentals of watercolor. Meals were wonderful, and the women had to get used to being pampered!
Everyone learned a lot and had a great time, though the weather did not co-operate. The next weekend retreat is scheduled for May 7 and 8!
